I had a pressing need to travel before I died, which I truly thought, was likely, too.
Clyde Marine was my initial " get in " to the Merchant Navy.
Once Id passed my high school exams, I was alloted a place on HND in Engineering with Marine Options. Its 1991. I'm 17 yoa.
First day, we had a representative fae CLYDE MARINE.
They alloted shipping companies to us.
Some, we're given Passenger Lines, others Oil Tanker firms. I was alloted a Glasgow firm, Harrisons Clyde. Stirling Shipping was a subsidiary of them.
We were given a paltry amount while training.Ahem.
There were guys fae Orkney and the like, that had to stay in THE HALLS OF RESIDENCE.
IF YIR WEAN DOES THIS JOB? DO YIR BEST TO FIND A FLAT, AS ITS RIP OFF City. THIS MEANS HALLS FOR A WHILE, TILL THEY GET PALS.
To give you an idea. Cadet money was say 90 quid, a week. HallsofPishidence wanted 70 off them for a bunk(similartoaship).
I'm 30m on a train fae GlasgowCollegeOfNautical studies so no need for me.
I get the new place, need for a bed. They twunts knew that too.
The very fact I've taken the time to mention that, says it ALL. It would be handy for a job you have to live, to achieve.
At the time I wasn't best pleased at the employer pairing. Witever. "YOUR AIM IS TRAVEL"
NEPOTISM, MUCH?
I had intention to bolt for years, once. My now wife is the best reason ever, for not.
As it happens, I was DeepSea, Wan.uno,ONE time.
If I'd stuck at it my wife could have came with me but 1 or even 2 mths babysitting would be takin the mick.(wives of senior officers joined witever port, then go home next stop for example)
What my mam n dad must've been thinking ill never know. I was 19, a big daft laddie as my dad used to call me, n I was going with £8.40, for 6 months.
It takes a measured person, to hope for, what I've done.
Big daft laddie, helped, too.
My travelling matured me. BIG TIME.
Parents of seafarers. -
In my know the job opinion.
Being a Deck Cadet has one skill outlay possibility.
🎶A life on the ocean wave🎶
Being an Engineer, of any sorts, has more work available onshore.
BEING A MARINE ENGINEER, NAMELY SKILLED IN ANYTHING, HAS YIR KID TOP OF THE "COULD BE" CANDIDATES.
I AM SURE OF THIS.
The very fact a Marine Eng. has came up with TKMS says something, in itself.

::edit... The job is outstanding. The eventual salary is varied upon risks, mainly.
Ie my last ship was, a Diving Vessel. The diver crew were top dollar(1200/day 20 years ago) . They were saturation divers and risked absolutely everything for dough, which effects future health too.
Not for me, but it was suggested to me as having the perfect physique for diving. It was an ex diver that, suggested that to me.
He was an ex diver who now ran after the money divers "in sat" meaning the guys inside Chambers, at high pressure so they could work at depth.
Their lives depended on Marine team keeping the lights on for dive crew..
It is a close knit world, is diving. My money was laughed at by divers!

::I feel it pertinent, I should mention this job is open to both sexes. I've only met one female doing Marine Engineering. That's wrong.
Everything is that big, cranes are used. Strength is not a requirement.
Wee edit. All the shite hitting the fan, with regards too approaching Suez canal, has me concerned.
